In seeing a tree, we see the universe.
This blog is a year-long project, following the life cycle of a single tree. It is intended to be an intimate photographic portrait, as well as an educational tool.
The tree featured in this blog is an American beech located along Long Swamp Creek in Pickens County, Georgia, USA.

Jim Smith, the botanist who is offering help with this project, received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in forestry from Syracuse University. He held a number of forestry jobs with Union Camp Corporation during his 35-year career, and also worked for the US Forest Service. He is a licensed Georgia forester, botanical adviser to Mountain Stewards, a lifelong Master Gardner, and member of Georgia Native Plants Society, Georgia Botanical Society, and Mountain Conservation Trust. He speaks frequently on native plants and gardening.


This is absolutely wonderful…I don’t know where you get the energy to manage all of your projects but this is one that I will follow closely. I already feel more in touch with my inner tree:)
